HELENA AND AURORA RANGE (BUNGALBIN)

Mining Tenements on Range

There are currently four mining tenements on Helena and Aurora Range (see map below).

  • M77/1097 (status: pending): located in the centre of the range, sometimes referred to as Bungalbin East.
  • M77/1096 (status: active): located at the southern end of the range including Bungalbin Hill
  • M77/1095 (status: active): located on the south end of the low BIF ridge (hill) heading out north-west of the main range, referred to as J5
  • M77/1242 (status: active): located at the north end of the low BIF ridge (hill) heading out north-west of the main range, referred to as Jackson 4 or J4

The four mining tenements on Helena and Aurora Range are currently wholly owned by Polaris Metals Pty Ltd and cover known iron ore deposits. There are exploration tenements over the remaining areas of the range.

The low long BIF hills heading out to the north-west from the main range are referred to as Jackson J4 and Jackson J5 deposits although they are part of Helena and Aurora Range. While the J5 deposit is located close to the main range of Helena and Aurora Range, the J4 deposit is approximately 22 km north-west of the main range (see map below).

In 2008, the proposed conservation reserve for Helena and Aurora Range excluded the mining tenement Bungalbin East, to be reviewed over a period of three years (EPA Strategic Review, 2008). However, all mining tenements, including Bungalbin East, are included within the existing Helena and Aurora Range Conservation Park that was vested in 2005. This was possible as conservation parks allow other landuses such as mining.
